You have available to you, what I refer to as “The 3rd Career Path”.

If you go back 20 plus years, you really only had two options to earn a living:

1: Get a job and try to build a career working for someone else – you are doing that now and it isn’t working out so well, is it?

2: Set up your own business – that typically involved considerable financial investment for premises, equipment and staff and brought with it considerable risk.

Now you have a 3rd career path  3: Start an Online Business

If that sounds a bit daunting and you don’t know where to start, bear with me. If you really what to know how to quit your job, this could be your ticket.

How To Quit Your Job –  What Type of Online Business Works for You

Let me start by giving you some examples of successful online businesses. These people have all built successful online businesses that generate enough income so they never need to look at a corporate job again.

Pat Flynn set up his online business when he was made redundant as an architect, buy selling an ebook on “How to Pass the LEED exam”.  He has since gone on to make over $1 million through affiliate marketing and selling online courses. He built his audience through his blog Smart Passive Income and now has a successful podcast and YouTube channel.

John Lee Dumas set out to produce a daily podcast interviewing successful entrepreneurs. He has used the traffic from the podcast to build a seven-figure income selling journals and software through affiliate partnerships. John also has a paid podcasting membership community.

Peter McKinnon has used his interest in photography to build a thriving YouTube channel with over 3 million subscribers.  He makes his income through sponsorship deals and affiliate income from the products he reviews.  You can also get quite famous – Peter recently had two of his photographs minted onto Canadian coins.

There are countless others who have found success outside of the corporate world. You can too.

First, you need to pick your platform.  This is how you will interact with your audience and who they will find you.

Here are your main choices.

  1. Blogging – If you enjoy writing and your audience enjoys reading, a blog may be the way to start. It is certainly the simplest medium.
  2. Podcasting – If you are comfortable in front of a microphone or even speaking on the telephone, these skills are well suited to podcasting. Podcasting is also a great way to deliver a business message to people who are driving to work or exercising in the gym.
  3. YouTube – If you are demonstrating or reviewing something, YouTube is your platform. All you need is a phone camera and a quality microphone and you are off to the races.
  4. Social Media – A good Social media strategy is important across all aspects of online marketing. However, it is possible to build a business just using social media. Setting up a Facebook community is a great way to build an audience. You can also use Instagram and Twitter to stay in front of people with regular updates.

Take some time to think about what interests you and where your audience is. If you want some help, I recommend Pat Flynn’s book “Will It Fly” and his online course “Smart From Scratch” which take you through how to select a niche for your online business and how to test it. There are also a wealth of resources on my site www.silentearning.com.

How To Quit Your Job – How Long Will It Take?

If you are anything like me, you are pretty excited by the prospect of quitting your job and setting up a business that will give you both the lifestyle and the income you want, but how long will it take?

This is a difficult one to give a definitive answer to and depends a lot on you. If you choose your niche well and allow yourself to be coachable, it can happen very quickly. However, do be prepared for a few setbacks along the way. All the people listed above made mistakes. They all went through times when they thought they would have to pack it in and go back to the corporate world. But they battled on and don’t for a minute regret the path they took.

As a starting point, I would recommend you map out how much you need to earn outside of work to be able to quit your job and maintain your current lifestyle.  That is your target.
